NEWS FROM EGYPT

For three days, Shreeji Newsagents in London became a window into Egypt through the world of Azza Fahmy.

For more than fifive decades, Azza Fahmy has looked to Egypt as an endless source of stories. Stories held within its history and symbols, carried through its poetry and music, and preserved through the hands of its craftsmen.

News From Egypt brought these stories together, tracing the many sources of inspiration that have shaped Azza Fahmy’s jewellery and world.

Across three chapters, the exhibition followed their journey: from the symbols and knowledge inherited from the past, to the words, sounds and voices through which they continue to be told, and the research and craftsmanship through which they are preserved and carried forward.

Together, they revealed the many ways culture becomes a source of inspiration, shaping what we research, what we design and what we create.

The Stories We Inherit

Egypt has always been a main source of inspiration for Azza Fahmy. For more than 55 years, the stories inherited from our culture have shaped the way we create.

For decades, we have studied ancient Egypt, returning to its temples and tombs and working alongside Egyptologists and archaeologists to understand its symbolic world. Through this continuous research, we have uncovered stories, meanings and inspiration that continue to inform our work today.

Ancient Egypt, for us, is home. And from that home, we have inherited countless stories — stories we continue to study, reinterpret and share with the world.

The Stories We Tell

Stories are not only inherited. They are also told — preserving culture, memory and the ideas that shape us, and carrying them forward from one generation to the next.

They live in the words we choose, the poems we return to and the songs we carry with us, changing shape with every telling. Arabic, with its extraordinary depth and richness,
gives words countless ways to express poetry, emotion and meaning. A single word can carry a sea of meaning.

For Azza Fahmy, words have often been the beginning of a piece. A poem, verse or words of wisdom can become the heart of an idea, guiding the design that follows. This chapter explored the ways stories are shared through language, sound and the voices that keep them alive.

The Stories We Preserve

Stories survive when they are carried forward.

For more than 55 years, Azza Fahmy has carried knowledge forward through a continuous process of research, design and craftsmanship. What is discovered through research becomes a source for design, while generations of skilled hands transform those ideas into jewellery, keeping techniques and ways of making alive.

These are the stories held in the hands of the people who make our jewellery. The stories we preserve by continuing to practise, teach and create.
